Teacher - Matt Gibson

Bio:
Teaching is not a side pursuit for Matt — it’s the cornerstone of his career. Based in Brisbane, Matt is a passionate and highly experienced drum teacher with over 15 years of teaching expertise and more than two decades of performance experience. He works with students of all ages and levels, specializing in guiding beginners to confident intermediate players, while also offering advanced instruction to aspiring professionals and seasoned hobbyists alike.

Matt began his musical journey on classical piano before transitioning to drums at the age of 8, quickly discovering his lifelong passion. By 16, he was already teaching others and laying the foundation for what would become a deeply fulfilling career. He completed all four AMEB CPM Drum Kit examinations before finishing high school and went on to earn a Bachelor of Entertainment Business Management from JMC Academy in 2014 — combining his love of teaching with a deep understanding of the music industry.

Matt studied under respected drummers Ross Moulle (Bee Gees) and Grant Reekman (Independent), refining a balanced approach that emphasizes both technical mastery and creative expression. His teaching method blends traditional structure with modern improvisational techniques, and he has authored two instructional manuals covering beginner to advanced material. His curriculum is further supported by the AMEB Rockschool grade books.

In 2021, Matt's dedication to music education was formally recognized with the highest level of professional membership from the Queensland Music Teachers’ Association (QMTA). He currently teaches over 80 students each week — a testament to his reputation and commitment to quality instruction.

As a performer, Matt has toured extensively across Australia and New Zealand, both as a session musician and as a founding member of the acclaimed band Young Lions. He has toured alongside high-profile acts such as Stan Walker, Short Stack, Taking Back Sunday, Silverstein, Anberlin, Hands Like Houses and In Hearts Wake just to name a few. His band’s 2017 independent release Mr. Spaceman received international praise, reaching #3 on the iTunes Global Chart and Australian Independent Album Charts, with features on Triple J, Channel 9’s TODAY show, and radio across the UK and USA.

Whether in the studio, on stage, or in the classroom, Matt brings passion, professionalism, and an infectious enthusiasm for music to everything he does.

Matt’s Projects:

Matt's main creative outlet is Brisbane based rock band - Young Lions. Dedicated and relentless, Young Lions’ latest and highly anticipated third album ‘Mr Spaceman’ launched into orbit in mid-2017 after almost two years of consistent preparation. Matching the bands commitment, fans of the Brisbane based 4-piece responded in kind; catapulting the album to #3 on iTunes global and #3 on the AIR Charts. Accompanied with outstanding reviews from industry giants such as ‘Rolling Stone,’ giving the album 4/5 and calling Mr. Spaceman a “record that explodes their sound into heady, arena-ready territory” the album is a certified success. ‘The Music’ whole heartedly agreed, matching the 4/5 rating with Aneta Grulichova going as far as calling Mr. Spaceman an “…incredible album. Definitely a fan.”

Praise for the boundary pushing concept album didn’t stop there either:
Depth Magazine: 10/10 - “… my album of the year so far!”
Kill Your Stereo: 90 / 100 - “A powerful LP that'll leave you on the edge of your seat.”
Sound Fiction: 8.7/ 10 - “…there hasn’t been as much of a response as they deserve. That should all change with the release of their third album, Mr Spaceman.”
The Sonic Sensory: 5/5 - “…a flawless display of musicianship, songwriting, and atmosphere… It is peerless.”

Supporting this release Young Lions embarked on an ambitious Australian headline tour, selling out almost every show on the run and delivering a live experience to rival the very best in the business. This should be of no surprise to anyone that has seen Young Lions before however, having already earnt a legion of loyal fans across the country supporting the likes of Hands Like Houses, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Silverstein, Dream On Dreamer, Bayside and Short Stack to name a few.

Having formed in the early months of 2013, Zach Britt (Vocals), Morgan Castle (Bass), Matt Gibson (Drums) and Ryan Allison (Guitar) created a band whose alternative edge has rapidly positioned them in the forefront of the rock genre. The release of ‘Burn’ in October 2013 was named “alternative Rock at its finest” and the title track earning them a spot on Triple J’s Short Fast Loud top 40 listener poll. The sophomore album ‘Blue Isla’ was released in January 2015 and was praised by Rolling Stone Magazine for the band’s “undeniable charm to the songwriting” and describing the fan-favourite track “You Are II” as a “a sonic adrenaline rush that rivals the best of 30 Seconds To Mars”.

With three highly acclaimed albums already under their belt, relentless touring and unrivalled commitment to delivering their best, Young Lions are a band on the verge of entering Australia’s elite.
